(Bloomberg ) Walt Disney Co. (DIS) agreed to create four new series for Netflix Inc. (NFLX) using Marvel characters such as Daredevil, adding to the online-streaming service's trove of original content.
Disney's Marvel TV division will start bringing the new shows to Netflix in 2015, Disney said today in a statement. The four series, featuring Marvel characters Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage characters, will culminate in a miniseries event, the company said.
The deal marks Marvel's biggest push into serial television, following the success of its characters such as Spider-Man and Iron Man on the big screen. Under a separate movie-distribution deal reached last year, Netflix also will air movies from Walt Disney Studios, including films from Marvel Studios and Pixar Animation Studios.
"Marvel's movies, such as 'Iron Man' and Marvel's 'The Avengers,' are huge favorites on our service around the world," Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said today in the statement.
